Sargassum – Good News for Fly Fishers!

Captain Mike was heading out with clients this week when they arrived at the north beaches and were greeted by thick mats of sargassum lining parts of the shoreline. It seemed as if it had happened overnight because the last time we were there, the beaches were clear.

At first glance, this might seem like bad news for a fishing operation. After all, no one wants to see seaweed covering the beaches. But the truth is...for fly fishers, this can actually be very good news.

When I was guiding in Florida, floating mats of sargassum often meant we had an excellent chance of finding large Snook, Tarpon, and a variety of other species. We would strip baitfish patterns right along the edge where the clear water met the seaweed, and that edge was often alive with fish.

Fish love sargassum because it provides shelter from predators above, where danger most often comes from. The seaweed also becomes home to small crabs, shrimp, and countless other tiny creatures, creating a natural food source that attracts larger fish. It's like an all-you-can-eat buffet with a roof over your head!

This is also a perfect time to fish a floating crab pattern along the edge of the sargassum and see what might be waiting underneath. We'll be giving it a try over the next few weeks, and I'll let you know the results in next month's newsletter.

A New Policy on Broken Fly Rods

On another note, we've had to introduce a new policy regarding broken fly rods.

One of the things we're most proud of is helping first-time saltwater fly fishers catch their very first Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Snook, or other flats species. Teaching anglers who are new to the sport is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. But with that learning experience occasionally comes a few mishaps.

Unfortunately, we've had to replace enough rod tips that we are now asking clients to pay $60 if they break the tip section of one of our fly rods. That amount simply covers what it costs us to receive a replacement tip from Orvis under their warranty program.

Most broken tips occur when anglers are casting to Snook or Tarpon holding tight against the mangroves. If the fly becomes snagged in the roots or branches, the natural instinct is to raise the rod and jerk on it, hoping the fly will pop free. Unfortunately, that's usually the quickest way to break a rod tip.

Here's the truth about mangroves—they're rarely forgiving!

It's not unusual to hang up a fly once in a while. You spot a big Snook tucked beneath the branches, your first cast lands a little short, and your next cast needs to be just a bit farther. Sometimes that extra foot puts your fly right into the mangroves. Around here, we jokingly call that "casting to the monkey fish."

If it happens, don't lift the rod. Instead, point the rod directly at the snag, keeping it low and in line with the fly, and give the fly line a firm strip. Many times the fly will pop free. If it doesn't, Captain Mike will quietly move the boat up to the snag so you can remove it by hand. Yes, it may disturb that particular spot—but don't worry. Captain Mike knows plenty of others!

-And, replacing a fly is a lot less expensive than replacing a fly rod!
